Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) Pump Guide | Antliaworks

Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) Pump Guide | Antliaworks

Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps have a range of applications across various industries. Here, we shares the tips and tricks he’s picked up when it comes to maintaining AODD pumps. AODD pumps are the real workhorses of the industrial pump world and are used in a wide range of industries. These include chemicals, food processing, paints, electronics, road construction, maintenance for industrial processes, electricity production facilities, food processing, wastewater and sludge processing, and mining. They are self-priming, will run dry without doing any damage and use no electricity. Powered completely from compressed air, they are used in applications where electricity is not available or must not be used, such as hazardous or explosive situations or at remote sites.

The Basic Components of an AODD Pump

AODD pumps are particularly versatile in being capable of pumping fluids from fluidised dry powder to shear-sensitive liquids, viscous liquids and abrasive slurries. AODD pumps contain fewer moving parts than many other types of pumps and therefore require less maintenance, yet provide easy access to those parts that may need servicing.

Advantages of an Air Operated Double Diaphragm AODD Pump:

AODD pumps benefit from their simplicity of operation. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of an AODD pump, where A & B are the diaphragms, 1-4 the ball valves and I and O the inlet and outlet ports respectively. The air valve is usually a shuttle valve to route the compressed air alternatively to each diaphragm. The movement of diaphragm A towards the middle of the pump generates a partial vacuum in the chamber. This makes ball valve 1 close, while ball valve 2 opens as air pressure moves liquid from the inlet into the chamber. At the same time, diaphragm B compresses the volume in its chamber, which closes valve 3 and forces fluid past valve 4 and out through the outlet port. When the air valve drives back the movement of the diaphragms, fluid is pumped through the left hand side of the pump.

Useful information on Air operated double diaphragm AODD pumps :

AODD pumps are very reliable since they have very few moving parts and components that can wear. They compare very favourably with pumps that have close-fitting sliding or rotating mechanisms, where the passage of abrasive slurries, for example, can cause excessive wear to the moving parts of the pump.

Key factors to consider for preventative maintenance are:

1. Diaphragm lifetime

2. Compressed air quality

3. Flushing of pumps after use.

Air operated double diaphragm pumps is a type of positive displacement pump but what sets it apart, is that it uses compressed air to operate. There are various advantages of using an air operated double diaphragm pump (AODD), but today, let’s conclude with a quick overview of this type of pump’s control mechanism. When you connect compressed air to an AODD pump, it goes into an air motor which directs the air to push a diaphragm, ‘pushing the liquid out’. The diaphragm which gets pushed is connected to a shaft which will pull the opposite diaphragm creating a cavity on the other side, ‘drawing in the liquid’.

Air Operated Diaphragm (AODD) Pump

AODD pumps(also known as Air operated diaphragms pumps, pneumatic diaphragm pumps, AODD pumps, AOD pumps) are used for endless applications in mining, industrial and general plant service. Powered only by compressed air, they are especially used where electricity isn’t available, or in explosive or flammable areas. AOD pumps are a type of reciprocating diaphragm pump which contains two diaphragms driven by compressed air. Air section with shuttle valve applies air alternately to the two diaphragms, each diaphragm has a set of check/ball valves.

OPTIMIZING USAGE OF AIR IN AODD PUMPS

In the industrial areas, there are some important operational costs – whether in the chemical processing, food & beverage, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, or mining industries – are the ones incurred for the purchase, operation & maintenance of pumps used during different production & transfer. One hidden component from the operating-cost perspective is the electricity used by double diaphragm pump , as per a study done by the Hydraulic Institute, account for nearly 20 percent of the world’s electricity demand. Assuming 7 cents per kilowatt/hour that equates to approximately $294 billion to operate diaphragm pump. Therefore, energy consumption can make up close to 90 percent of the total life-cycle costs of owning & operating a pump. Approximately 30 to 50 % of the energy consumed by pump systems can be saved by using air operated double diaphragm pump. Considering all the usage estimates, simple calculation reveals that up to $147 billion of electricity costs ...

Double Diaphragm Pump

What’s a double diaphragm pump? An air worked double diaphragm pump (also known as a Double-Membrane pump, pneumatic diaphragm pump or air-worked diaphragm pump) is a positive displacement pump that utilizes a mix of the responding activity of an elastic, thermoplastic or Teflon/pate diaphragm and appropriate valves on either side of the diaphragm (check valve, butterfly valves, fold valves, or some other type of stop valves) to pump a fluid. Diaphragm Pumps also known as Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pump ( AODD pump ), is a sort of responding positive displacement pump in which fluid is pumped by a responding diaphragm, which is driven by a solenoid, mechanical drive, or fluid drive. Different forms are air worked Pump has inlet & outlet check values. Diaphragm pump has great dry running qualities; they can be up to 97% effective. Diaphragm Pumps can deal with exceedingly thick fluids. A double diaphragm pump is known as a positive displacement pump. It utilizes t...
